TikTok cuts working hours for Chinese workers

ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, instructed all its employees in China to end the day at 7 pm. The company adopts a policy to reduce working hours. The guidelines require employees to start work at 10 am and end the day at 7 pm. on all five business days. Employees who wish to work longer hours must have obtained prior approval the day before.

As part of the new policy, employees can extend their working hours for a maximum of three hours a day and eight hours a week. It is also reported that ByteDance employees will receive three times the amount of regular overtime.

The company took this decision as a step towards creating a better, stress-free work environment. A few months ago, the company also canceled a policy that allowed employees to take just two days of vacation in two weeks.

China’s technological culture is known for its 996 work ethic, which encourages workers to work from 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week. Formula 996 is highly regarded and welcomed by prominent business personalities including Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, and Richard Liu, founder of JD.com. Earlier this year, the Chinese government banned the concept of 996 jobs because it caused serious mental health problems among the masses.
